Description

The eucapnic voluntary hyperventilation test (EVH) is a drug-free alternative to other provocation tests and thus enables further assessment of exercise-induced respiratory diseases such as asthma.

It simulates breathing during exercise and is ideal for diagnosing exercise-induced airway obstruction. The EucapSys system enables cost-effective use of the EVH, as it mixes the eucapnic gas concentration itself.

Measurement principle

First, the FEV1 value is determined using forced spirometry as a baseline. The patient then breathes a dry gas mixture with 5% CO2 at room temperature through a breathing mask for about 6 minutes and hyperventilates. The EucapSys continuously monitors the individual target. Post-measurements are taken after the challenge. A decrease in the FEV1 value of more than 10% compared to the baseline may indicate asthma.

Clinical use

The EucapSys reduces gas-related costs by 90%, making gas supply significantly easier and more secure. Using cost-efficient cylinders for compressed air and CO2, the system generates the required hypercapnic mixture. An innovative, patented technology enables this mixture to be generated in stages, up to 200 l/min as required. The CO2 content is dynamically regulated to 5%, which corresponds to a PetCO2 of 40 mmHg.
